Sentence:
A sentence is a group of words which gives a complete sense.
For example:
- I write a letter.
- They do not like cricket.
Kinds of Sentences (Construction Wise):
According to their construction, the sentences are divided into three kinds:
- Simple Sentences: A sentence which has only one subject and one predicate is called a simple sentences.For example:
- We play cricket.
- Ali reads a story book.

Compound Sentences: A compound sentence has two or more main clauses.For example:
- The sun came out and the sky grew bright.
- She is rich, yet she is not happy.

Complex Sentences: A complex sentence consist of one or more main clauses and one or more subordinate clauses.For example:
- The school in which i teach is very famous.
- He went to hospital because he was not feeling well.
- We play cricket.
- Ali reads a story book.

Kinds of Sentences ( Meaning wise):
There are five kinds of sentences according to their meaning.
- Declarative or Assertive Sentences: These sentences tell us about some action or incident that has taken place or not.For example:
- I go to school regularly.
- He did not play the match.
These sentences have been sub divided into three kindsa) Affirmative Sentences: An affirmative sentence gives us positive statements such as:.
- They have won the match.
- I read news paper daily.
b) Negative Sentences: The sentences declaring negation for some task, description or fact are called Negative sentences.For example:
- I do not tell a lie.
- The sun does not rise in the west.
c) Emphatic Sentences: A sentence which describe some thing forcibly is called an emphatic sentence.For example:
- They shall win the competition.
- She did go to school.
- Interrogative Sentences: A sentence which ask a question is called an interrogative sentence. For example:
- Do you like Apples?
- Did they go to park?
- Imperative Sentences: An imperative sentence expresses a command, a request or suggestion.For example:
- Sit Down!
- Walk Slowly!
- Please help me!
- Exclamatory Sentences: These sentence express some sudden but strong feeling sentiments(sadness,happiness,surprise).For example:
- Hurrah! We have won the match.
- What a beautiful scenery!
- Alas! He has died.
- Optative Sentences: A sentence that expresses a wish, hope, or desire is called an optative sentence .For example:
- May you live long!
- Would that i were rich!
